Main Text: Genesis 17:23-27
Watchword
So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him. Genesis17:23 NKJV
Abraham took his whole family, including Ishmael and his servants, and had them circumcised. Abraham’s immediate obedience is a further evidence that he chose to trust the Lord and to take Him at His word. The willingness to follow God’s instructions, and to do so instantly, is a key aspect of Abraham’s character. This is the attitude which leads to Abraham being a model of godly faith. (Romans 4:3).
In this text, we see the obedience which flows from faith. Abraham believed God’s promises, and so he did what God commanded. Abraham’s immediate response of faith indicated his assent to God’s plan. (Hebrew 11:6). He obeyed because he believed in the promises of God, his faith was in God. May we have the faith of Abraham, and may that faith be accompanied by the obedience of Abraham as well.
This text stresses the important role of obedience to God. If we follow Abraham’s step, we will not prevaricate for one moment once God speaks to us. (James 1:22). The response of proper faith to any divine command is always obedience.
Confession: Oh Lord, help me to focus on you as I walk in the footstep of faith and in obedience to your words.
Prayer: Grant me the grace oh Lord to be obedient and to trust in you all the days of my life. Amen
