Psalms 92:1-15
Watchword
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High
Psalms 92:1 NKJV
The proclamation in this text sets the tone and positive reminder of the value of worship. Those opening words are powerful! “It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord.” God views the thanks of His people as being good. Good means beneficial, pleasant, favorable, happy, right and even well! It is a good thing, as in a delightful thing, not merely acceptable to God, but a real joy to the heart.β Do something good today by spending your time in gratitude. Everyday should be filled with appreciation and gratefulness! (Psalms 147:1)
The Psalmist is excited, praising God with thanksgiving! Notice the giving of thanks and the singing of praises is placed side by side, because their is an association between these two heart-felt activities.
Thanksgiving, talks of speech as being verbal, songs of praise of course is musical. The two just go together! One leads to the other, thankfulness yields praise! (Psalms 100:4). If you will genuinely, from your heart, thank God for a few things, your heart soon will be thinking or even quietly humming a few words of some song you know, a hymn of praise to Almighty God! And, especially if you are alone, watch out! You just might break out into boisterous song!
It is good to give thanks and praise to the Lord because of who He is and what He has done, for God rightly deserves it. (Psalms 92:1-5) God is Yahweh, the covenant-keeping Lord. He is also the Most High, translated the El Elyon, a name frequently attributed to God. God “Most High” is the possessor of heaven and earth, the recipient of blessing and honor, the deliverer of His people! (Genesis 14:18-20). This leads me to ask, βIs the Lord God your Most High?β Is He the highest, most important, most central and the controlling being in your life? If you do not thank and praise Him as your Lord Most High, you are guilty of horrible ingratitude! He alone rightly deserves all praise and glory because He is the Lord Most High.
