Psalms 19:7-11
Watchword
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Psalms 19:7 NKJV
One of the very first things that David says about the Law is that it is “sure, making wise the simple”. The decisive reason why man disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, is the desire for wisdom. Eve desired the wrong source of wisdom by judging the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, “to be desired to make one wise” (Genesis 3:6). Instead of asking or trusting God, Adam and Eve chose to seek out wisdom according to their own understanding—listening to Satan rather than God. Because of their sin, they died, along with the rest of humanity after them.
The Word of God is not against knowledge; it is only against knowledge which does not begin at the right place. Let your knowledge stems from the word of God because it is sure, reliable and can be trusted (James 3:17). The law, the testimony, the precepts and the commandment “of the Lord” are the channels by which God has chosen to reveal Himself to us so that we can find and enjoy Him better. The understanding of God is through His knowledge by revelation in nature, and the revelation given in the bible, written Word of God.
Wisdom” is “skill in living godly!” Truly God’s Word imparts such wisdom! (Proverbs 2:6). God’s Word, give us more confidence, more wisdom and more discernment! Instruction in wisdom seems here to be added as the commencement of the restoration of the soul. Understanding is the most excellent endowment of the soul; and David teaches us that it is to be derived from the law, for we are naturally destitute of it. In the first place, that none are endued with right understanding until they have made progress in the study of the word of God.
