THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD

Main Text
Psalms 34:1-10

Watchword
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalms 34:8 (NKJV)

As people of God, we have to keep the refrain: God is good, all the time, and all the time, the Lord is good. Don’t just look on, wishing that my blessings were yours. Taste the Lord’s goodness yourself! Prove in your own experience that the Lord saves all that take refuge in Him. The one who will ‘taste’ (experience the righteous life that the psalmist commends) will inevitably ‘see’(fully realize and appreciate) the gracious nature of the Lord ” (1John 1:1-3)

The expression “taste and see that the LORD is good” combines several ideas. To “taste” means something more than a fleeting relationship. It means to feed on the Lord—to accept His truth deep into one’s self (John 6:53)—which involves reading the written Word of God voraciously and mulling over it as part of our discipleship. To truly know God, we need to absorb His message as if we were eating it (Revelation 10:9-10).

In Matthew 11:28-30, God exhorts us to put Him to the test of experience. If we will only place our trust in Him, we will find by experience that He is faithful, His laws are good and His lifestyle is refreshing. God’s faithfulness is most fully on display. There is really no other way of knowing how good God is except when you try Him out. The central appeal is this: Taste and see the goodness of God. You won’t be disappointed. God is faithful and can be trusted, so taste and see that God is good.
