Main Text
Psalms 19:1-10
Watchword
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Psalms 19:7 NKJV
The Law and testimony of the Lord are the comprehensive terms for God’s revelation here in this text. God has revealed Himself generally in nature. We can know God in a general sense as the Almighty Creator through His creation, but we can come to know Him personally in a much fuller and perfect way through His Word. One reason the word is a greater revelation than the nature is that it tells us much more about God (Deuteronomy 32:4). It reveals Him as the covenant God of love and faithfulness to His people.
As great as nature is, and as wonderful as general revelation is, it is God’s spoken Word that gives us life. The first term used is that of the Law, “the Torah”, which is the comprehensive term for God’s revealed will.
(John 6:63). When we hear the word “law” we usually think negatively, like penalty, punishment or judgement. The Hebrew term for law here simply means instruction or teaching. The Torah expresses God’s love because the law reveals God’s way to live.
The breath of God in His Word and through the work of the Spirit of God is what breaths eternal life into our lives. For that reason, David says the Torah, the law, converts our soul. The word “convert” is “revive” meaning to satisfy one who is hungry, or to comfort one in distress. (Psalms 116:6). The transforming power of God’s Word affects us to the very core of our being, to our soul. While nature will shout to you of God’s power and majesty, it is in His Word we find the power to be changed within.
