The Deception of Secret Sin

God’s Heart Today (G♥️T)

A Daily Devotional with David Olatona

Main Text
Psalms 19:10-14

Watchword
Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.
Psalms 19:12 NKJV

The purpose of this text is to explain the folly and danger of trying to hide our sin, while the aim is for us to repent and forsake sin of every kind. One of Satan’s biggest lies is that there are some sins that God does not either care about or know about. In the Christian life, one little hidden sin can weaken the foundation of a person’s character and be the cause of our downfall. It is particularly repulsive to God when someone claims to love God publicly, but then disrespects Him to His face in private. (Titus 1:16). Hypocrites are repulsive to God. (Matthew 23:27–28). The worst kind of hypocrisy is the one done in worship. (Isaiah 29:13–14).

The law reveals our own errors, those hidden faults that we have covered up so well in our lives. What should frightens us the most, is not just the sins that we know we commit, but the vices we have spent a lifetime dressing up as virtues.(James 1:14-15). The brilliant light of God’s laws will shine its searching rays into the darkness of our soul. We need to remember that all sin is sin, whether we see it or not. When we omit the good, we still need to be told what we have left undone. Some sins are not known not because they are so small, but because they are too characteristic to us to be registered.

We need the word to serve as God’s mirror that shows us the truth about ourselves (James 1:22-25). God who reveals Himself to us in creation will transform us as we hear or read and obey the word. We need to pray this prayer, “Cleanse me from secret faults”, knowing that we could not know just how many of our errors were before God, we need cleansing even from the sins and faults that are even secret to us. We need to desire the inner purity of heart, but this is peculiarly God’s prerogative. It is His work to cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of his Holy Spirit.

Confession
Heavenly father, you are my God, teach me how to guard my life from every error and secret sin, for I am devoted to you.
