The Covenant of Circumcision

God’s Heart Today (G♥️T)

Main Text
Colossians 3:1-10

Watchword
This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised
Genesis 17:10 NKJV

God begins here to give Abraham a sign to all the promises that he has made to Him.
God always appoints covenant signs to confirm His word and His promise, to assure the faith of His people. (Genesis 9:11-17). Covenant is a binding relationship with promises and obligations. God designates circumcision as the sign that He has chosen to be the sign of the covenant between Himself and Abraham.

This is the first time that a covenant with God is requiring something of man. This is different, in addition to the call to be blameless before God, circumcision a physical act is also required. So God was concerned about the inward change of the heart and not just the outward sign of the covenant even prior to the coming of the Messiah. (Deuteronomy 10:16)

Circumcision is a symbol of Abraham’s relationship to God and signified what his moral conduct should be. Circumcision, for Abraham, meant that he had bound himself to God in this covenant. He looked forward to its blessings, and he also submitted to its stipulations.

Confession
Our Lord and our God, we thank you for the glorious signs of the new covenant, you have personally designed to remind us that we are heirs to the promises that you made to Abraham and fulfilled in Jesus Christ to strengthen our faith in you.

Prayer
Oh Lord, give us the grace to trust in you indeed, for you are our God and we are your people, by grace through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
