Luke 10: 25-29
To have a cause is to have a reason; where there is no reason for the existence of something, there will be disaster.
Our first assignment is to worship God, and God is a Spirit – He cannot be painted or drawn, He can only be worshipped and we must worship Him with all our strength, heart soul and mind; He must be first and He must be all.
Our second assignment and reason for existing is to perform the duty of service and ministering to our neighbours. Who is your neighbour? He or she who is located near you, in your workplace, resident area etc.
John 13: 35 – “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
WHAT IS SERVICE?
- Service/ministering is meeting needs with love.
- Work done by one person or group that benefits others.
- An act of help or assistance.
In vv. 30-35 of our scripture reference, the Samaritan met the need of the wounded man with compassion and love, despite being a total stranger; it is not enough to carry service out because it is your duty, service must be carried out with care and love.
Everyone has needs and things to take care of, and the reason why we exist as Christians and as a church is to meet each other’s needs with love – we must be compassionate towards one another. The greatest thing we can show one another is love (I Cor. 13: 13); God wants us to be known by the care that we show, He wants your business, your church, your work to be known by the love and charity you show! Eph. 6: 8 – what you make happen for others is what will happen for you; whatever you good you do cannot go unnoticed; Luke 6: 36-38 – if you forgive, you will be forgiven; if you give you will be given back to; if you show love and care, same will be reflected back to you. You do not have to earn much before you can stretch out a helping hand to others; no matter how bad you think your situation is, there are others in worse situations than you are! We must shun the Cain-mentality that says “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God wants us to get rid of every ounce of selfishness that may exist in us; He wants us to be our brothers’ keepers! Phil. 2: 4 – “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”
Say this prayer quickly with me – Father, I receive grace to look out for others, particularly those in the household of faith; give me grace to look out for everyone You have made to cross my path; help me not to be selfish or self-centered. Envelope me in love that I may radiate it to others in Jesus’ name. AMEN!
