Watchword
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes
Psalms 19:8 NKJV

This text indicate that the study of God’s laws and commandments is a must, if we are to do the will of God (2 Timothy 2:15). The word “statute” translated “precept” refers to a more specific “charge” or “appointment” while the word “commandment” is a more general word for any kind of “order”. God’s word gives us both specific orders to guide us in specific situations and broad principles to govern our life. The statutes and commandment of the Lord, have the effect as guiding men in the ready way to eternal happiness, and offers the promises of mercy.

The statutes of the Lord are “right”. They are ‘straightforward, just and upright. There is no moral perversion in them; and so, you can be confident that when you keep the statutes of the Lord, you are keeping true to what is pleasing and acceptable to Him. The commandment of the Lord is “pure”, there is no hidden agenda in them and there is nothing of sin in them. If we follow them, we walk in a way that is pure before God. The results of God’s word, is that it rejoices the heart, and it enlightens the eyes (Deuteronomy 5:33).

The statutes and commandments of the Lord, are universally, practically and morally right because it is the revelation of a God who is holy, true, and always right. Right in this context means “to make straight, smooth upright, opposed to crookedness in mind or conduct; showing what the man should be, both within and without.” The one who knows the word of God and the God of the word rejoices in this, meaning he finds joy, actual pleasure in the truth of God and relationship with God revealed in His word (James 1:25).
