A Daily Devotional with David Olatona — FOCUS ON THE LORD
*Main Text*
1 Kings 18:20-21
*Watchword*
And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.
1 Kings 18:21 NKJV
Indecision is not a moral or religious neutral ground. This text shows the people of Israel in a spiritually lukewarm condition, they lacked the courage to either defend their position or to change it. They were willing to live unexamined lives of low conviction because they have no objection and no repentance. God as the Creator, Life-giver, eternal, immortal, invisible, omnipresent and omnipotent deserves our whole devotion.
Our God is a Jealous God, He wants all our love or none of it; He won’t take only part because He is not interested or satisfied with divided devotion (Exodus 34:14). It is dangerous to halt between the service of God and the service of sin, the dominion of Christ and the dominion of our lusts. Jesus is the only Saviour, let us cleave to him alone for every thing; and the Bible as the word of God, let us reverence and receive the whole of it, and submit our understanding to the divine teachings it contains. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
A Christian is one who is in vital relationship with the sovereign God of the universe through faith in the person and work of Christ. In view of that, perhaps nothing is more pathetic than to see a child of the living God, tottering between two opinions, torn between a vital commitment to the Lord, and seeking happiness in the gods of this world (1 John 2:15-17). Elijah indicated this choice CAN be made in a moment. We should not put off choosing Christ above all one more day. To delay making a decision for God now, is to reject Him. (Hebrews 3:15)
*Confession*
I am a dedicated child of God, I choose to pursue God sincerely and wholeheartedly above anything or anyone else.
*Prayer*
Heavenly father, cause me to begin to enjoy the abundant blessings of knowing you, pouring into my life without measure in Jesus’ name. Amen.
